Initial Allegation that LATAM Plane Falls in Freefall: Flight Attendant Presses the Wrong Button

Jakarta

A new allegation on Latam Airlines’ Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane that dived sharply in the middle of the flight emerged. It was said there was a flight crew error.

The incident occurred on Monday (5/3/2024). In the middle of a flight from Sydney, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand, the plane carrying 263 passengers fell into a nose dive. Passengers, who were not wearing seat belts, were flying and bleeding. As many as 50 passengers were reported injured in the incident.

Quoted from TMZ, Saturday (16/3/20224), The Wall Street Journal revealed initial evidence indicating an incident in the cockpit at the Chile-based airline. It was said there was a cabin crew error.

“…while serving food, a flight attendant accidentally pressed a button on the pilot’s motorized seat… pushing it forward and causing the plane to dive,” the New York-based media found.

“The switch had a cover that was supposed to prevent that kind of thing from happening while the pilot was sitting, but clearly something wasn’t working… or this was a case of egregious operator error,” the statement added.

Quoted from CNN, The New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) will seize the black boxes of the LATAM Airlines flight.

“TAIC is in the process of collecting evidence relevant to the investigation, including seizing the cockpit voice and flight data recorders,” TAIC said.

Boeing was not immediately available for comment regarding the incident. Meanwhile, Chile’s aviation regulator, which is leading the investigation, said the investigation had only just begun” and investigators had already arrived in New Zealand.
