Vietnam Raises White Flag, Flights Stopped, No Tourists to Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc tourism in Vietnam is not doing well. At the end of this year, various problems made Phu Quoc give up without any hope.

Reporting from Vietnam Express on Friday (15/12), Phu Qouc’s travel and hospitality industry was being strangled due to the suspension of domestic and some international flights.

Flights have been suspended until the end of the year due to low demand there. The number of domestic tourists going to Phu Quoc has halved in the last 3 months, before the shutdown. This means that there will be fewer tourists coming there without flights.

Phan Van Manh, director of Phu Quoc Golden Dragon Travel Company, said without flights from Da Nang, Phu Quoc would lose a large number of tourists from the central region. Meanwhile, tourists from the northern region will not be interested in coming because plane tickets are very expensive.

Currently a round trip plane ticket from Da Nang is around VND 5 million or around IDR 3.2 million per person. This is just plane tickets, not to mention the skyrocketing prices of hotel accommodation and tours. The rise of fraud among tourists also makes tourists increasingly deterred from going there.

“With skyrocketing airfares, Phu Quoc cannot compete with tours to Thailand or other mainland Chinese,” Manh said.

According to calculations, Manh’s company revenue may fall by 50% compared to last year. Unlike Phuket or Bali, Phu Quco still relies on domestic tourists rather than tourists.

Vu Tuen Van, chairman of the Adavigo tour company, said that foreign tourist arrivals at the end of the year were still in the quite good category. However, there were no domestic visitors at all.

Van company revenue fell by 70% this year. Meanwhile, hotels only have 10% occupancy during non-peak periods. Of the 24,000 rooms in 700 accommodations, only 3,000 passengers fly there every day. That’s only flights from Hanoi, Hai Phong and HCMC.
